Aumovio ARS 548 RDI 77GHz 4D Radar for Industrial Sensing
Aumovio ARS 548 RDI is a 77GHz 3D/4D long-range radar that measures distance, relative velocity, azimuth and elevation for industrial perception. Its 192 virtual antennas and digital beam forming provide spatial radar data for collision-warning development, remote-area monitoring, object analysis and height-measurement applications.
The sensor uses 100 Mbit/s BroadR-Reach Ethernet and the Radar Detection Interface (RDI). Aumovio describes nominal detection out to approximately 300 m and customer-configurable extended operation up to approximately 1,500 m; extended range depends on the active configuration and sensing conditions. The radar kit, radar-only unit, converter and cable are distinct product selections.
Features
- Four-dimensional radar measurements: Combine distance, Doppler velocity, azimuth and elevation in the same sensing cycle for spatial perception.
- 192 virtual antennas: A 16 RX × 12 TX arrangement and digital beam forming support angular measurement and spatial separation.
- RDI and object output: Use radar detections and supported object output in a compatible perception or monitoring system.
- Nominal and extended range: The manufacturer describes approximately 300 m nominal coverage and customer-configurable extended operation up to approximately 1,500 m.
- Defined measurement conditions: Distance resolution is 0.22 m; stated ±0.15 m point-target accuracy depends on ego-speed conditions and is separate from resolution.
- Cyclic 3D perception: The typical full-field measurement cycle is approximately 50 ms; the data sheet also specifies different timing for rear operation and standstill.
- Automotive Ethernet connection: The 100 Mbit/s BroadR-Reach interface supports integration through a compatible network connection or suitable media converter.
- Industrial housing: A PBT GF 30 radome and aluminum rear housing, dust and high-pressure-water protection, and −40°C to +85°C operation support demanding installations.
- Practical mechanical integration: A 137 × 90 × 39 mm sensor body has three rear mounting bolts; allow 65.5 mm depth with the connector.

Integration Notes

Power, Network and Mounting
Provide a regulated supply within DC 8.5–17 V and account for the stated peak current. Connect BroadR-Reach through a compatible 100BASE-T1 network or media converter; a conventional Ethernet cable alone does not provide physical-layer conversion. Allow room for both connectors and preserve the horizontal and vertical keep-out zones.
Match RDI message decoding, sensor orientation and host coordinates to the delivered sensor configuration. The angular field of view and timing change with operating conditions, so check these settings before using detections in a monitoring or motion-control system.
Applications
Collision-Warning Development
Use distance, closing speed and angular position as inputs to collision-warning logic on vehicles and mobile machinery. The complete application combines sensor output with machine-state data and the required control behavior.
Remote-Area and Work-Zone Monitoring
Observe far-field or inaccessible areas from a fixed installation. Select range configuration and mounting geometry for the actual targets and keep a clear sensing path.
Object Analysis and Classification
Spatial radar detections support object-analysis workflows that use range, motion and angle together. Distinguish raw detections, clusters and tracked objects when defining host data handling.
Height and Clearance Measurement
Elevation measurements provide an additional spatial dimension for evaluating the position and height of detected objects. Available elevation coverage depends on target range.
AGVs and Industrial Transporters
Provide forward- or rearward-looking perception data for autonomous mobile platforms, forklifts and special transport vehicles. Plan the BroadR-Reach interface and host processing alongside the vehicle’s other sensors.
Cranes, Construction and Heavy Machinery
Support obstacle monitoring around cranes, loaders and other working equipment. Define monitoring regions and object handling for the machine’s movement and surrounding structures.
Road and Rail Infrastructure
Develop distance and speed monitoring, parking-area surveillance or approach-assistance systems using radar measurements and installation-specific processing.

FAQ
What does 4D mean for the ARS 548 RDI?
It refers to measuring distance, relative velocity, azimuth and elevation. These measurements provide spatial and motion information for the host perception system.
Is 1,500 m the normal range for every target?
No. Aumovio describes approximately 300 m nominal operation and extended range enabled by customer configuration. Actual detection depends on the active configuration, target characteristics and sensing conditions.
Does 0.22 m mean the minimum detection distance?
No. The 0.22 m figure in the detailed data sheet is distance resolution. It describes target separation and must not be used as the minimum-range specification.
What is the vertical field of view?
The detailed ARS 548 RDI data sheet specifies ±4° at 300 m and up to ±14° below 100 m. The ±20° figure is a vertical installation keep-out zone, and ±70° is the horizontal keep-out zone.
Does it always output at 20 Hz?
A typical 50 ms full-field cycle corresponds to 20 Hz. The detailed data sheet also lists approximately 70 ms for rear operation and 100 ms at standstill, so the delivered configuration and operating state matter.
Can it connect directly to a normal Ethernet port?
It uses 100 Mbit/s BroadR-Reach automotive Ethernet. The host needs a compatible physical interface or suitable 100BASE-T1 media converter as well as support for the sensor’s output protocol.
Can I power it directly from 24 V?
No. The specified sensor supply is DC 8.5–17 V, with 12 V nominal. A 24 V installation requires an appropriate regulated power-conversion arrangement; functions deactivate above 18 V DC.
Does the data sheet’s automatic-alignment specification apply to this model?
The automatic-alignment entries in the shared technical table are explicitly marked for the ARS540 automotive model. Set and verify the ARS 548 RDI installation orientation for the actual integration.
What is the difference between the radar kit and the accessory selections?
The radar kit is the sensor-package selection listed in the Packing List. Radar only, Converter and Cable are separate selections; purchasing a converter or cable alone does not supply a radar sensor.
Is an ARS 408 CAN driver compatible with the ARS 548 RDI?
An ARS 408 CAN implementation is not a direct interface match. ARS 548 RDI uses BroadR-Reach Ethernet and its applicable RDI/object messages, so integration must use the correct network and protocol support.
