Hiwonder AiNex Humanoid Robot Kit, Raspberry Pi 5, ROS & AI Vision
Program a Humanoid That Walks, Tracks and Interacts
Hiwonder AiNex brings ROS and Python programming into a walking, vision-guided humanoid. Use its pan-tilt camera to track targets, follow lines and practice ball-shooting tasks, then explore inverse kinematics and custom actions on a pre-assembled robot powered by Raspberry Pi 5.
Choose the 20DOF Starter Kit for biped motion and camera-based projects, or the 24DOF Standard Kit with movable gripping hands for additional grasping, sorting and carrying exercises. Both are available with Raspberry Pi 5 2GB, 4GB or 8GB; the selected board is included.
Built for hands-on robotics learning: start with visual action editing and documented demonstrations, then develop your own ROS and OpenCV projects. Select the kit for the movements you need and the memory for your software workload.

What can you build with AiNex?
Biped gait and whole-body motion
- Omnidirectional walking: Experiment with forward, backward and lateral movement, turning and coordinated multi-joint motion.
- Adjustable gait parameters: Study how movement height, speed, direction and turning radius affect biped locomotion.
- Inverse kinematics: Explore posture adjustment, foot placement, body balance and coordinated servo control through the supplied ROS software.
- Custom actions: Create and edit poses, movement sequences and performance actions with the AiNex visual action editor.
- Obstacle-course exercises: Official demonstrations include stair movement, autonomous hurdling and low-clearance passage.

Stair climbing, hurdling and similar functions are educational demonstrations rather than guaranteed performance on arbitrary terrain. Results depend on servo calibration, gait parameters, battery level, surface friction and obstacle dimensions.
Camera-based AI vision
The 2DOF pan-tilt head uses a 120-degree wide-angle camera and OpenCV-based software for connecting visual perception to physical movement. Supported learning directions and official examples include:
- Color and object recognition
- Color target tracking
- Face-detection and recognition exercises
- AprilTag recognition
- PID line following
- Vision-guided ball shooting
- Visual positioning and movement control

Vision performance varies with lighting, target contrast, camera focus, calibration and the operating environment. AiNex uses a monocular camera and is primarily intended for OpenCV and tag-based vision learning rather than depth perception or LiDAR SLAM.
Grasping, sorting and object transport
The Standard Kit adds four degrees of freedom and movable hands that can open and close. This configuration supports the official intelligent sorting, object-grabbing and transport exercises using small, lightweight teaching objects.
- Recognize and locate coloured blocks
- Open and close the hands to grasp small objects
- Sort objects according to visual features
- Combine grasping with biped movement
- Study basic hand-eye coordination

The movable hands are designed for lightweight educational objects. Hiwonder does not publish an industrial payload or repeatability specification for this robot.
Starter Kit vs Standard Kit
| Model | Mechanical configuration | Recommended projects | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | 20DOF biped configuration without movable gripping hands | Walking, gait planning, inverse kinematics, action editing, recognition, tracking, line following and ball-shooting demonstrations | Users focused on biped motion and basic AI vision at the lowest entry price |
| Standard Kit | 24DOF configuration with four additional hand degrees of freedom and movable hands | Includes the shared Starter projects and adds visual grasping, intelligent sorting and object-transport exercises | Universities, laboratories, competitions and users who want the complete AiNex project set |

Which model should you choose? Select the Starter Kit when your main interest is walking, gait control and camera-based recognition. Select the Standard Kit when you also want to build grasping, sorting, carrying or hand-eye coordination projects.
Choose the Raspberry Pi 5 memory
| Controller | Recommended use |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 2GB | 2GB RAM; select for a project whose memory requirements fit this configuration. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 4GB | 4GB RAM; additional memory for your chosen development workflow. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 8GB | 8GB RAM; more memory headroom for additional applications or multitasking. |
Increasing the Raspberry Pi memory does not change the robot's number of joints, servo torque, walking speed, camera resolution or included mechanical functions. The Model determines the mechanical configuration, while the Controller determines the available computing memory.

FAQ
What projects can I build with AiNex?
AiNex supports biped walking, inverse-kinematics experiments, posture and gait adjustment, custom action editing, OpenCV recognition, target tracking, AprilTag recognition, line following and ball-shooting projects. The Standard Kit also supports visual grasping, sorting and lightweight object-transport exercises.
What is the difference between the Starter Kit and Standard Kit?
The Starter Kit uses a 20DOF configuration without movable gripping hands. The Standard Kit uses a 24DOF configuration with four additional hand degrees of freedom, allowing it to perform the official grasping, intelligent-sorting and object-transport projects.
Which kit fits my project?
Choose Starter for walking, gait control and shared vision lessons. Choose Standard when your project needs movable hands for grasping, sorting or carrying lightweight objects. Then choose the Raspberry Pi 5 memory capacity for your software requirements.
Should I choose Raspberry Pi 5 2GB, 4GB or 8GB?
All three choices use Raspberry Pi 5 and differ in available memory. More RAM can provide headroom for additional tools or multitasking, but does not add joints, improve servo torque or unlock Standard-only hand functions. Match capacity to the programs you intend to run.
Does AiNex support ROS 2?
No. Hiwonder currently states that AiNex does not support ROS 2. Purchase it for the supplied ROS environment rather than for a ROS 2-specific course or project.
Does the Raspberry Pi 5 version use Docker?
Yes. Hiwonder states that the functional programs for the Raspberry Pi 5 version are contained within Docker and that official development is performed inside the Docker environment.
Can AiNex be programmed in Python?
Yes. The official software supports Python programming and ROS-based development.
Does AiNex support Gazebo simulation?
Yes. Hiwonder advertises Gazebo simulation support for ROS algorithm testing and virtual control. Access to the applicable models or files may require purchase verification.
Does AiNex support voice interaction or ChatGPT?
Not in the standard configuration. AiNex does not include a voice-recognition module and is primarily designed for biped motion, inverse kinematics, ROS and camera-based AI vision.
Does the robot require mechanical assembly?
No. The robot is supplied pre-assembled. Users should still expect to complete software setup, networking, charging, calibration and project configuration.
Can AiNex climb stairs and cross obstacles?
Official demonstrations include stair movement, autonomous hurdling and low-clearance passage. Performance depends on calibration, gait settings, battery condition, surface friction and the dimensions of the test environment.
How do I obtain source code and simulation resources?
Some official resources are provided through Hiwonder's tutorial centre, while other files may require an eligible order number. OpenELAB customers can contact OpenELAB after purchase for guidance on the applicable resource-request process.
